Microsoft’s CEO embraces Nonviolent Communication
“One of Nadella’s first acts after becoming CEO, in February 2014, was to ask the company’s top executives to read Marshall Rosenberg’s Nonviolent Communication, a treatise on empathic collaboration.
“The gesture signaled that Nadella planned to run the company differently from his well-known predecessors, Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer, and address Microsoft’s long-standing reputation as a hive of intense corporate infighting.
“The Microsoft that Nadella inherited was regarded by both Wall Street and Silicon Valley as fading toward irrelevance. Nadella has not only restored Microsoft to relevance; he’s generated more than $250 billion in market value in just three and a half years—more value growth over that time than Uber and Airbnb, Netflix and Spotify, Snapchat and WeWork. Indeed, more than all of them combined. Only a handful of CEOs—names like Bezos, Cook, Zuckerberg—can boast similarly impressive results.
“How Nadella turned things around comes back to the book he had his top lieutenants read, and the culture that took hold from there.
“Nadella’s approach is gentler than his predecessors, Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer. He believes human beings are wired to have empathy, and that’s essential not only for creating harmony at work but also for making products that will resonate. “You have to be able to say, ‘Where is this person coming from?’” he says. “‘What makes them tick? Why are they excited or frustrated by something that is happening, whether it’s about computing or beyond computing?’”
“Nadella also updated Microsoft’s mission statement—once, in Bill Gates’s words, “A PC on every desk and in every home, running Microsoft software”—with a more modern mantra: “To empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more.”
“In these times,” he wrote, “to me only two things really matter as a leader. The first is that we stand for our timeless values, which include diversity and inclusion. . . . The second is that we empathize with the hurt happening around us. At Microsoft, we strive to seek out differences, celebrate them and invite them in. . . . Our growth mindset culture requires us to truly understand and share the feelings of another person. . . . Together, we must embrace our shared humanity, and aspire to create a society that is filled with respect, empathy, and opportunity for all.”

“EMPAUA is an IT Consultancy and we decided to use NVC to improve our communication and conflict resolution skills so we could cope with both interpersonal problems and difficult clients at the same time. Daren was a great support when we were introducing NVC to our team in London. We have had different NVC workshops in our company but Daren has been the only trainer who really understands how to explain the immense advantage of using NVC in a business context. One can really feel his 20 years of experiences in NVC and coaching. Our London team has recently initiated monthly meetings with Daren to solve interpersonal problems and deepen their skills practice.” – Elena Lange, People Developer / Legal Consultant, EMPAUA

I would highly recommend this training . . .” – Peter Phelps, Restorative Justice Team Manager, Newham Youth Offending Team.
Team Building for Organisations or Businesses
Nonviolent Communication is a very powerful tool for team building. It provides a common language for all members in a team to communicate. It fosters listening, empathy and care in communication. And it provides common tools to resolve conflicts between team members.
Daren specialises in facilitating ‘Clear the Air team meetings’, that support team members to express and resolve frustrations or negative views that they have been holding in relation to one another for varying lengths of time. Facilitated expression of these can re-establish harmony and greatly improve team cohesion and functioning.
Consensus Decision making for Teams
Is your team struggling to make collective decision? Are you wanting to include the views of all team members and come to consensus based decisions, but you keep finding yourselves bogged down in differing opinions that it is hard to reconcile?
Daren has developed a process which combines the communication skills of NVC with sociocratic principles, to enable teams that are struggling to find their way through to agreements that all team members can stand behind. This simple process helps to unblock and allow the flow of decisions that can get your team moving forward again. Contact Daren to discuss this further.
Workplace Mediation for Organisations or Businesses
We offer a confidential workplace mediation service for anyone in your organisation or business experiencing a communication difficulty or breakdown with any other number of individuals. Go to our Mediation page for more details.
Coaching for Organisations or Businesses
We can provide workplace coaching for a single member of your staff or a small group from your organisation or business, coaching them through communication difficulties they encounter, until they have internalised essential communication and conflict resolution skills.
